... you just won't learn from others misstakes and experiences. Or when they clearly got a superior way of handeling things, but you're just to stubborn(or stupid 😑) to take the same approach. When you're out driving and are just about to run over a stroller, and your friend's like "Noooo, stooop! There's people on the road!!" and you're just like "Nooot gonna listen to you... I'ma ram that shit!"...
It just makes you think... Isn't it about time, to just do better?
So ye, I guess this one's gonna come out as a bit more of a politically toned post, than ma usuall ones. But ok, I'ma hit the breaks on the rantyness a bit, and explain where I'm commin from.
But before I say anything else: I'm no expert in anything (even though I like to think I'm super smarter 😒). I'm simply just speaking my mind, and I hope it translates that it comes from a good place.
So for a few years now, we've struggled to take good enough care of our elderlies in this country. I'm not gonna go into how I believe it got this way in the first place, but just to sum up what is up: A lot of people have been forced to live in cheap ass retirementhomes, being left alone in their beds for long periods of time with not much more than a potato a day to sustain them(Slight exageration). (Again: I'm no expert. But it does suck😣) So one might ask "Why aren't we doing more for those sweet oldies of ours?", and ye... Rightfully one might, and should, ask that. Cause it seems like there's a lot we could do at basically no significant cost, but just... Aren't.
So I've been watching this short series on Swedish television lately, where they've let a bunch 4 year olds hang out with a bunch of 80-ish year olds for a few weeks. The kids come over in the morning and they all eat together, go on small trips outdoors, play the piano and dance, chill out and just fuckin blaze it (No... They did not blaze it😶). Aaaand guess what! After just a few cheap (like, financially cheap) weeks hangin out, everyone seems happier, more energized! Depression's gone, or at least lightened, and it's just like they've found this magical trick for a better oldie-life. It's just that, it's no magic trick... It's just from having some freakin kids over.
So when I watch this show, other than obviously being happy to see all the joy and love that just oozes out of the television, it also... Kinda pisses me off.
Cause newsflash! People who is forced to stay in their bed all day, with almost no food or friends to keep them company, gets sad and depressed! And SOMEHOW, they seem to be happier when surrounded by joyous kids who wanna be friends with them. Who could have known?! :O (Ok, I'ma chill the passive aggressiveness here and just say... I... Me... I kinda knew🙄). It doesn't require much. Just a few nice kids, some old people who needs cheering up, and someone nice to help putting them all in the same room. That, is something we Can do.
It's not just that it's cheap and simple, but it's just how we are designed. As humans, we are made to live together, share joy and pain, cry and thrive together. We just are.
Old people have so much to teach us, and if you're just not a complete asshole, they tend to be very caring (and sometimes, if you're lucky, they care even if you're an asshole). And children have so much joy, curiosity and energy in them! And is it just me, or don't they seem to have like an inate drive to just share that shit with the rest of us?
"So what's all that rant about? 🤔" you might ask... Well, I'd say first of all, we gotta start caring. And we gotta stop leaving people in the gutter. Sure, it is great that we've got retirementhomes. Cause don't get me wrong, I'm really not sayin anything opposed to that. And of cource it is hard to find the time to hang out with our oldest(never the less with each other), but when there's clearly a way, why not walk it?
In the last episode of the show, one of the people who had been running the experiment, mentioned the idea to put the retirementhomes and the preschools under the same roof. So simple and genious. And it frustrates me that something so natural, and acctually pretty obvious, would ever be called genious! For me at least, it's just too obvious! The oldies get to play with the smallies, and the smallies gets to learn from the ones of us who has the most to teach. All while the preschool teachers gets at least a slight workload OFF their shoulders. That's not just a win-win, but a win-win-win!
Lastly, I leave you with this gentle reminder:
Guys, I know that corona is being a bitch to us all. It's terrible, and it sucks! But as I've touched on before: physical distancing, not social, and Never humane! Cause when it comes to our spirits, we should Always strive to get closer.
It just makes you think... Isn't it about time, to just do better?
